Introduction
This scholarship provides financial assistance for education-related expenses to eligible children of fallen or disabled first responders and military service members. Awards support study at accredited trade schools, colleges, or universities and may be applied to programs at the trade, undergraduate, or graduate level.
Permitted Uses of Funds
- Tuition for in-state or out-of-state programs
- Room and board
- Required textbooks and course materials
- Necessary equipment and other academic expenses
Who is Eligible
Applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be a child of a fallen first responder or military service member, OR a child of a first responder or military service member who has been certified as unable to work.
- Be under 25 years of age at the time of application.
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalency, or be in the final year of high school.
- Be enrolled in or have been accepted to an accredited trade school, college, or university to pursue trade, undergraduate, or graduate studies.
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (based on high school or undergraduate record to date).
Application and Documentation Requirements
Applicants must submit:
- Two non-family letters of recommendation:
- One from an educator, employer, or community member who knows you and your goals.
- One additional recommender of your choice.
- Two essays:
- Essay 1: What have you learned from being a child of a first responder or military service member?
- Essay 2: Why are you applying for this scholarship and how will it help you?
- Proof of dependency.
- A death certificate or proof of Individual Unemployment issued by the Veterans Administration (or equivalent documentation for a first responder).
- Verification of the parent’s first responder and/or military service.
Selection Criteria
Candidates will be evaluated on:
- Academic achievement to date and demonstrated leadership
- Potential for future academic and professional success
- Strength of recommendations and responses to the required essays
- Completeness and accuracy of supporting documentation
Terms and Conditions of the Award
- Scholarship payments are issued directly to the accredited institution on behalf of the recipient; recipients will not be given funds personally.
- Awards cover tuition, room and board, required books and equipment, and similar eligible academic costs.
- Each scholarship covers one academic year. Recipients may reapply for consideration in up to six separate years, but receiving an award in one year does not guarantee awards in subsequent years.
- If a recipient voluntarily withdraws from the institution before the academic year ends, any unused portion of the award must be returned to 9.11 Promise Run, Inc.
- If a recipient is dismissed or otherwise asked to leave the institution before the academic year ends, any unused funds must be returned to 9.11 Promise Run, Inc.
- If a recipient transfers to another school during an academic period funded by a 9.11 Promise Run, Inc. scholarship, prior written approval from 9.11 Promise Run, Inc. is required for the scholarship to continue.
