Electronics Division — Lewis C. Hoffman Scholarship
Overview
The Electronics Division is accepting applications for the Lewis C. Hoffman Scholarship, a $2,000 tuition award intended to foster academic interest and achievement among undergraduate students studying ceramics or materials science and engineering.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be classified as a junior or senior and have accumulated at least 80 semester credits (or the equivalent in quarter credits) by the time they submit their application.
- The recipient must still be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at the time the award is issued (October).
Selection criteria
The recipient will be chosen based on a combination of the following factors:
- Overall GPA and science GPA (the science GPA must be confirmed in the faculty recommendation letter)
- PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores, if available
- A recommendation from a department faculty member
- Involvement in extracurricular activities
- A 500-word essay on: “The Role of Polymer-Derived Ceramics in Shaping Additive Manufacturing for Electronics.”
- If any part of the essay was created or assisted by artificial intelligence tools (for example, ChatGPT, Gemini, or similar), the applicant must include a brief statement in the submission explaining how those tools were used.
Application / Nomination instructions
Complete and return the nomination form along with:
- Your 500-word essay on the specified topic
- A faculty letter of recommendation (which should verify the applicant’s science GPA)
- Any available PSAT/SAT/ACT scores and documentation of extracurricular activities, as applicable
Award presentation
The scholarship winner will be announced and presented with a plaque and the $2,000 check during the Electronics Division business meeting in October.
