Overview
The Kentucky Broadcasters Association offers two distinct scholarship opportunities for students connected to the broadcast industry in the state. Both programs retain specific eligibility rules, award amounts, and application expectations as described below.
KBA High School Senior Scholarship
- Eligibility: Open to children of persons who are currently employed at an active KBA-member radio or television station.
- Award: Up to fourteen (14) scholarships awarded each year, each valued at $2,100.
- Use: This is a single, non-renewable award and must be used solely to support the recipient’s postsecondary education expenses.
Application deadline: April 1, 2026
KBA Harry Barfield Scholarship
- Eligibility: Available to students who are presently majoring in broadcasting or communications at a college or university in Kentucky.
- Award: Four scholarships of $3,500 each are offered.
- Selection process: Recipients are chosen through a competitive application review that considers academic performance, a faculty recommendation, involvement in extracurricular activities, and a 500-word essay.
- Renewal and priority: Awards may be renewed for a second year if the student continues to meet the scholarship’s requirements. Preference will be given to applicants who are rising juniors.
Namesake
This scholarship program honors Harry Barfield, the late chairman of the Kentucky Broadcasters Association and former manager of WLEX-TV in Lexington.
