Introduction
The 8 & 40 organization supports healthcare professionals who work with respiratory illnesses in children. Although the group’s principal focus is pediatric lung and respiratory care, applicants pursuing general nursing or respiratory therapy are eligible; candidates aiming to specialize in pediatrics will receive preference.
Who is eligible
- Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited nursing school or an accredited respiratory therapist training program.
Application availability and how to request one
- Applications are made available each year beginning January 1.

- Include your full name, mailing address, phone number, and email address when requesting an application.
Deadline and submission instructions
- Completed applications must be received in the National Office by May 15 each year (this is a received-by deadline, not a postmark date).
Award details
- The scholarship amount is set annually. Payments are handled through the recipient’s college/university or respiratory therapy program financial office.
- Once awarded, funds may be used for tuition, books, and laboratory fees.
Documents to include with your application
- A short essay explaining why you chose this career and outlining your future goals.
- Three recommendation letters from non-relatives (examples: clergy, representatives of charitable organizations, school counselors).
- An academic transcript (if you have not yet taken college courses, high school records are acceptable).
- Proof of current class registration.
