ABFSE National Scholarship Program

Scholarship Sponsored by American Board of Funeral Service Education

Value: $2,500
Awards Available: 5
Deadline : Sep 01, 2025

The American Board of Funeral Service Education's National Scholarship Program was initiated to offer financial support to students pursuing their education in funeral service or mortuary science. The program, which was launched in the 1960s, has since provided scholarships to numerous students.

Typically, the scholarships range from $1,500 to $2,500 per academic year and are directly applied to the student's tuition fees once the college confirms their enrollment. Students are allowed to apply for the scholarship once every year.

The process of selecting scholarship recipients is competitive due to the high number of applicants compared to the limited number of awards available. The Scholarship Committee of the American Board of Funeral Service Education, which meets twice a year in April and October, is responsible for awarding the scholarships.

Eligibility Criteria:

For a student to be eligible for the scholarship, they must--

  1. Have completed at least one semester (or quarter) of study in a funeral service or mortuary science program accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education. Only students in coordinated programs attending an American Board accredited institution are eligible for the scholarship.
  2. Have at least one term or semester left in their program that will start after the award date (April or September) to be eligible for a full award. Students with less than a full term of study left will be considered for partial awards.
  3. Fill out all the forms required by the Scholarship Committee of the American Board of Funeral Service Education and submit them before the specified deadlines. The committee will not consider late or incomplete applications.
  4. Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident, International Student (F1-Visa holder), or a student in the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
